TYPE DESIGN

THis typeface design was made to live flexibly instead of statically. Each letter is formed by a shared group of shapes found in construction rubble. the rugged shapes come together cohesively and surprisingly with elegance.

The concept of flexible system design is inspiring because it opens up diverse possibilities in one concept while still staying cohesive. It moves away from more traditional design in, let’s say branding as an example, where there is a fixed logo that is used in static applications. Flexible systems are more fit to apply to the many digital applications in current design.

Designing my typeface, ‘SCRAP’ was a great practice in this exciting concept. The type was based in forms and shapes taken from bins of construction rubble found along the roads and walkways in Barcelona. They can be found all around the city, although they are overlooked as the focus stays on the beautiful surrounding architecture. They are filled with the mundane grunt work that comes with maintaining a beautiful city. I found this to be a great inspiration to base a type in.

The forms I work with come together with messy yet delicate balance in each letter. They feel organic and flow nicely together. The concept of scraps of concrete and steel coming together into an entire typeface design could be used for many different applications.
