to hear
EXPANDS ON THE concept of deep listening, where you turn involuntary listening into a conscious act. This practice can help you notice the nuances of your environment.
TOHEAR
With this platform, the user becomes a participant in the acoustic environment of Barcelona. They can record, map, reflect, and share the sounds they experience on a daily basis.
A collection of sounds can be captured in interesting and creative ways with the main benefit of creating a stronger connection to place.
TOHEAR is the title of my final project while completing my Masters in Visual Design at Elisava School of Design and Engineering in Barcelona, Spain. The project encompassed an array of design mediums including print, editorial, packaging, web, motion, and product.
My inspiration in the project was to design something that connected us to our environment in a new and interesting way. I followed that curiosity to develop a project based in soundscape. I created work that came from this idea of immersing ourselves in urban landscapes through our interaction with sound.
The product and packaging design for this project is encompassed in a design for vinyl. The album cover holds a tear out for an earpiece that impacts your hearing experience. It wraps around your ear and emphasizes a closeness to this sense. The album itself is a recording of experimental sound mixes from the soundscape of Barcelona.
For editorial, I designed a book that provides a cultural context for the concept of soundscape and how it is relevant to urban life today. The design for editorial is experimental and has a layout that flows in a way similar to our oratory experiences.
